Indirect Books
We are pleased to announce an open reading call for novellas. We’re seeking manuscripts between approximately 20,000-40,000 words, that operate via a contained internal logic: that is, works that are written as novellas (and not, for example, compressed novels or enlarged stories). We’re looking for projects that make surprising and compelling use of the novella form, and as always we’re interested in risk-adept and language-driven writing that rests comfortably beyond convention.

We aim to find at least one novella project to acquire and release in 2027. Novellas will receive our full editorial and production support, including distribution to the trade. Find formatting rules below; for our complete general guidelines, including notes on process, see our Submissions page.
Please send us sample pages from a section of your manuscript, beginning with the opening, up to 5,000 words. To accompany your submission, please include a brief author bio, including publication history, alongside a query letter with the following information:
- Word count
- 1-2 sentence pitch
- 2-3 paragraph synopsis
- Comp titles (here we’re especially interested in other novellas you see your work as conversant with)
